Monitoring Kenya
from Orbit

Earth observation is the cornerstone of Kenya's space programme. Our satellites and international data partnerships provide vital information for agriculture, environment, disaster management, and sustainable development.

Overview

Eyes in the Sky for Kenya

Kenya's Earth observation programme combines data from our own Taifa-1 satellite with international sources including ESA's Copernicus programme, NASA's Landsat, and JAXA's ALOS series.

This data is processed at KSA's National Space Operations Centre and distributed to government agencies, researchers, and the private sector, enabling evidence-based decision making across Kenya's key development sectors.

Our goal: provide every Kenyan county with access to satellite-derived information for planning and development by 2030.

Applications

How Space Data Serves Kenya

🌾

Agriculture & Food Security

Monitoring crop health, predicting yields, and tracking irrigation patterns across Kenya's agricultural regions. Satellite data helps smallholder farmers make better decisions and supports Kenya's food security objectives.

🌍

Environmental Monitoring

Tracking deforestation, land degradation, and water resource changes across Kenya's diverse ecosystems, from the Mau Forest to Lake Victoria and the coastal mangroves.

Disaster Management

Early warning systems for floods, droughts, and locust swarms. Satellite imagery enables rapid damage assessment and coordinates emergency response across difficult terrain.

🏗️

Urban Planning

Monitoring urban expansion in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kenya's growing cities. Satellite data informs infrastructure planning, informal settlement mapping, and sustainable development.

🦁

Wildlife Conservation

Tracking wildlife migration patterns, monitoring protected areas, and detecting poaching activities using satellite and drone imagery in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service.

🌡️

Climate Change

Long-term monitoring of glacier retreat on Mount Kenya, sea-level changes along the coast, and temperature patterns that affect agriculture and public health.
