Project Centinela marks a significant shift in Kenya's space strategy, introducing advanced real-time monitoring capabilities for national security and environmental protection.
The Centinela Mandate
Launched in January 2026, Project Centinela (The Sentinel) is an integrated space-based monitoring program designed to provide high-cadence situational awareness over Kenyan territory. The project's primary mandate is to support national security, maritime surveillance, and the protection of critical infrastructure through real-time satellite data.
Technical Infrastructure
Centinela leverages a hybrid constellation model, combining high-resolution imagery from Taifa-1 with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from international partners. This allows for 24/7 monitoring capabilities, even during heavy cloud cover or at night.
The project includes the establishment of a dedicated Operations Center at the KSA headquarters in Nairobi, where data is processed using specialized machine learning models to detect unusual patterns in maritime traffic or changes in remote terrain.
Impact Assessment
Since its inception, Project Centinela has already provided critical data for several initiatives:
- Maritime Security: Enhanced tracking of vessels in the Indian Ocean to combat illegal fishing and piracy.
- Border Monitoring: Improved situational awareness in remote border regions.
- Wildlife Protection: Real-time monitoring of sensitive ecological zones to prevent poaching and habitat destruction.
- Critical Infrastructure: Safeguarding major installations such as the Port of Lamu and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
