Kenya's comprehensive space policy framework establishes the legal, regulatory, and institutional structures needed to govern space activities and foster a competitive space economy.

The Framework

The Kenya Space Agency was established in 2017 under Legal Notice No. 22, succeeding the National Space Secretariat. KSA operates under the Ministry of Defence, with a mandate to promote, coordinate, and regulate all space-related activities in Kenya.

Space Regulation

Kenya is developing comprehensive space legislation that covers satellite licensing, launch authorization, liability frameworks, and space debris mitigation. This regulatory environment is essential for attracting private investment and international partnerships.

Space Economy

The global space economy is valued at over $400 billion. Kenya's strategic location on the equator, existing space infrastructure at Malindi, and growing technical workforce position the country to capture a meaningful share of this market.

International Compliance

Kenya is a signatory to the Outer Space Treaty (1967), the Registration Convention, and actively participates in UN COPUOS, the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. KSA ensures all national space activities comply with international obligations.
