The Kenya Space Agency has officially launched the National Earth Observation (EO) Data Sharing Framework, aimined at centralizing and improving the coordination of space-derived data.
The Framework
The Kenya Earth Observation (EO) Data Sharing Framework provides a structured approach for the collection, storage, and distribution of satellite imagery and other geospatial data. By centralizing these resources, KSA aims to eliminate data silos and reduce redundant procurement costs across government agencies.
The framework supports Kenya's Vision 2030 by providing essential evidence for planning in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban development.
Data Access
Under the new framework, government ministries, research institutions, and the private sector can access high-resolution Earth observation data through the KSA Data Hub. This include imagery from Taifa-1, as well as data from international partners like ESA and NASA.
Key Applications
Prioritized applications for the data sharing framework include:
- Agriculture: Monitoring crop health and predicting yields at a national scale.
- Disaster Response: Rapid assessment of flood-prone areas and drought monitoring.
- Urban Planning: Tracking city expansion and informal settlement growth in real-time.
- Natural Resources: Monitoring forest cover and water levels in Kenya's water towers.
